Writing Process
For the first time I finally got the chance to write in comedy at uni. It was also the first time writing in a group and the first time writing a porno. A lot of firsts.
Our first writer’s meeting went for 3 hours. We first went in and spat out all our ideas. Something was missing, there wasn’t a valid reason why Joe would get involved in the porn industry, money wasn’t a good enough reason. This is how we came up with Andy, Joe’s famous porn star twin brother and Joe’s failed marriage to a money hungry Darlene. Adding these characters changed the story completely and just made everything flow a lot better. It was so fun going from this meeting and coming up with anything I wanted (obviously following the deliverable the showrunner set).
The week before our final scripts were due, all the scripts were read out to the class and we all received feedback. I didn’t take in a lot of the feedback as I believed it wasn’t constructive. Then I thought to myself I can’t defend work I’m not 100% proud of and happy with. So then I read the script. I had decided all the things I didn’t like, not because of the feedback but because I personally didn’t like it. I re-wrote the script. Sent it to the showrunner and he couldn’t be happier. He said I followed the brief and even took it further then he expected (adding Sharon). I then went to look back at the class’s feedback and none of it applied anymore. I was able to fix in my mind the errors and complete the final script.
