Pattern Library

What is a pattern library?

Atomic method

If you want to improve the User Experience of your website patter library is a way to provide consistent and predictable UI, helps to iterate faster the prototype, also save quality time to work on new problems or the details of the project .

Patterns can improve code and speed up implementation, avoid errors and improve your team performance with shared understanding for the elements of the product in order to avoid misunderstandings. Plus, in case there is a new team member will feel more comfortable and get into the atmosphere faster.

This partner aims to give the ability to everyone to build blocks, create applications in a high experience. It can be used to explore and get some idea of how to create content, visuals and components.

The navigation for Polaris is completed with a sidebar. As it seems from many libraries, sidebar is a useful trend that can make the navigation easier- explore components whilst being in the same interface. As the image above shows the website is very comprehensive with a clear structure.

The MailChimp pattern library is a good example and fully responsive website. A navigation bar with two options is provided for desktop and a hamburger menu for smaller interfaces. The example above is a screenshot with a hamburger menu and a vertical navigation to view components.

The third example is lonely planet, they found it very difficult to maintain a UI Style Guide and sync it with the application. The pattern library was their solution to keep everything organised and up-to-date. The collection of lonely plant includes a variety of components and everything is achieved to be accessible and responsive with a vertical navigation, dropdowns and highlights.

All of the above examples have a well structured navigation, improved the communication between the team and found it easy to maintain code-design standards.

The test plan is going involve user feedback, browser testing and code validation of the pattern library. Remember that even if you make the perfect website, you should always make sure that everything works, verify links and functionality.

A browser testing is needed to make sure that the pattern library works successfully for everyone. Below, there is a list with the browsers that will be tested:

1. Google Chrome

2. Edge

3. Internet Explorer

4. Opera

This phase is after the development phase in order to make sure that all the HTML files are correct and follow the web standards.

After the completion of the work four users are going to test if they can navigate and interact with the pattern library easy. The test should normally take less than six minutes and then people will be asked to answer seven questions about the design of the interface and its functionality.. This phase will help to gain some objective feedback on the final pattern library and find out if the work is succeeded and failed.

→To ensure that users understand what the work is about, I decided to update the README file on GitHub to give a basic explanation of the project and what it is included.

README-GitHub

The pattern library has to be a collection of a minimum of 6 components that needs to be designed and implemented. Below, there is a specification list that outline the needs of this project.

1. Main scope is to design a pattern library that effectively works for people on desktop interface. Also, it will be a plus to make the screens as much responsive as possible for mobile devices due to the limited time.

2. A collection of at least 6 components need to designed and implemented. This needs to include a navigation bar, header element, 6 button styles, jumbotron, footer and a component of my choice.

My choices for the extra Component

— — Cards- 100% need to be created

— — Pagination- try to find time and create it

— — Breadcrumbs — if there is time available

3. Good documentation of the main code needs to be added below each component of the pattern library for concept understanding. Also, a title that describe the specific component needs to be added for a clear structure.

4. Make sure that the code, HTML has been used properly and follows the WS3 standards. Main comments also it is good to be added in the code to separate functions and them clear, easy for understanding.

5. Test the pattern library on the browsers and check if the website is working efficiently with high standard.

An important and good way to start the design phase is to sketch some ideas, different layouts and then choose the final design. Sketching, with an actual pen and paper is a method to express thoughts and explore more options, quick and very effective. Below you can see a screenshot of my sketches of the pattern library, the beginning phase before wireframes.

Ideas

The next phase wa the low-fidelity wireframes, using wireframe.cc as a tool to illustrate the general structure of the website. This method is a quick and effective way to identify basic, early usability issues and clarify the position of the elements. Screenshots of wireframes can be found below.

Desktop wireframes
Mobile wireframe

Sitemaps are organized diagrams that shows the pages and logic of the web pages. A sitemap can be a very effective method for both planning and communicating about the structure of the product. Below there is a site map of this project-pattern library.

Site map

At this point, I used Codepen to create some compontes and quickly check if it works or not. Experiments are important to get a basic idea and then create a proper solution. Below there are two screenshots of a responsive navigation bar- hamburger menu and a jumborton.

The scope of this project was to explore, design, build and test a pattern library using the methodology of the Waterfall process.

To make sure that the outcome is functional and understandable four users have been asked to navigate thru the website and then answer 7 questions for an objective feedback.

In order to ensure that specifications and goals of this project have been achieved a checklist table was created. This table includes check of components, the browser testing and WS3 check standards. Below, the completed table for successful outcome can be viewed and proof that the project has been completed successfully.
