Coral Bleaching

What is coral bleaching? Coral bleaching is when water is too warm; corals expel the algae (zooxanthellae) living in their tissues causing the coral to turn completely white. When a coral bleaches, it is not dead. Corals can survive a bleaching event, but they are crucial to ocean life. Coral bleaching affects the species that depend on them, such as the fish and invertebrates that rely on live coral for food, shelter, or recruitment habitat. Many of the things that cause coral bleaching are, extra-bright sunlight, especially when combined with the aforementioned extra-warm seawater, Disease, Pollution from urban or agricultural run-off, Changes in the salinity, or saltiness, of seawater and/or Sedimentation from undersea activities like dredging. The leading cause of coral bleaching is change in ocean temperature, here in south Florida it’s usually always hot and so are our beaches. This affects not only ocean life but us as well. South Florida has the only coral reefs in the continental United States and is mostly known for their beaches and ocean life, they are a major tourist attraction, and they support jobs in fishing, diving and snorkeling. Dave Gilliam, another Nova scientist, says the impact on our coral reefs is the worst he’s seen in his 17 years studying the reefs.
