How Can we Beat Procrastinations

Every time I get the tasks to do, it is hard to fight over procrastinating something. When I have to reply to all the e-mails I got, finish the peer-reviews of manuscripts that are sent to me, and score all the assignments submitted by undergraduate students where the course I’m currently working as a teaching assistant, I can feel that I keep procrastinating by making a bunch of other excuses.

Surely, not only me, everyone may keep asking how can they beat procrastination in their daily routine. Why do we always work until the deadline is over? Wouldn’t it be great if we finish all the tasks way before the deadline comes? We know it is hard, but if we can finish tasks much before the deadline, we might get enjoyed playing around with friends, and having free time to watch YouTube or Netflix.

In this post, I would like to share some know-how to get overcome procrastination and achieve our free time.

It is important to understand the real important things which are the tasks unveiled with several other miscellaneous things that are not important that much. The most important thing is to focus on the task at hand and not get sidetracked by other things that are not as important.

Consider the situation that you are an undergraduate student and readying for your graduation. Within more than weeks, you have to finish writing your graduation thesis and finalizing your poster. In this period, the most important thing would be making that graduation stuff. However, your friends might be tempting you to participate in their home party saying you have more than 3 weeks, and it is enough to ready for graduation. Or, you might get interested in your future job searching after you graduated. In this case, you can feel confused about which task is the most prioritized for you right now.

The first thing you should make sure of is knowing the most important task that you should do right now. Don’t get feel confused with other miscellaneous kinds of stuff. Those tasks can confuse you, and keep you away from what matters. After you know what the most important task is, you can focus on it and put your effort to make it done.

Are you still not getting which task is the most important thing right now? There is a really simple way to figure it out. Start doing what you think you’re most afraid of.

Consider the situation that I mentioned above. Now, you have three options to choose from:

(1) Preparing your graduation stuff (writing thesis & making poster)

(2) Participate in-home party

(3) Progressing your job searching

If you are in that situation, option (1) would be the thing that you are most afraid of. Yes. Unfortunately, that is the most vital thing that you should do right now. It is that simple to find out the priorities of your tasks.

Now we knew that the most imminent thing that we should do right now is the fearest thing that we want to get away with. Then, you might ask how we can fight against the fear. Well, good question. Since nobody wants to fight against fear, we should know the way to overcome it.

When we meet the fear, firstly we would get frightened. We would get emotionally mood-driven, therefore we cannot enter into the main job that we have to do. The simple method to solve is just doing it. You might see this catchy phrase somewhere. That’s right. It is the famous Nike’s catchy-phrase. We have to fight against fear by just doing that thing. Think that fear is just part of your daily mission, and get into that thing right now. Don’t be hesitant by other temptations. There are lots of sweeteners that will make you dizzy, stay strong. Instant gratification is just a simple pleasure. There would be nothing beyond it.

Beating procrastination is not a simple and easy task. That is really hard stuff to overcome for any people who are living on earth. But we have to think carefully. When you are watching Netflix and YouTube, delaying important tasks around you, drinking, and wasting your time would not only harm your near future but the whole life that is given to you. If you are fear to do the most important thing that you should do, consider which is a way more frightening; wasting your life? or just moving on to that thing right now?
