Help With Running As You Get Older

Feedback from experienced runners

I wrote recently about the effects of getting old on my running. The responses I received were amazing. I decided to write this follow-up to share the excellent ideas I received from veteran runners on how to manage your running as you grow older.

Firstly, a quick thank you to everyone who shared thoughts via Medium, Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Four main areas of suggestions emerged:

A lot of the advice shared included the type of exercises to pair with running. I’ve been working on this for a while and it was good to get reinforcement on the type of exercises I could be doing.

Yoga was the most popular option that people suggested and I’m personally going to start. Reading the feedback, there were several key benefits of yoga that people saw:

This makes yoga perfect for both improving sprints and long runs, something I know will help many as they get older. For me personally, back pain has become something I needed to deal with and yoga will be great for that as well.

Based on suggestions, I’m going to introduce three sessions a week. They don’t have to be massive and can fit alongside some strength sessions, the exercise that was also on the recommendation list of experienced runners.
