Little Women

The story that touches the reader’s heart…

I recently watched the new movie of Little Women (which is the book “ Little Women” and “Good Wives”). It touched me again like how it did in the books, the characters played well in the movie, and I really enjoyed it.

In this story, it talks about the life of the March sisters, how they fight, how they help each other out and how they love.

Margaret, or known as Meg, is the oldest of the four sisters in the family. She is elegant and smart. Being the oldest one in the family, she takes the responsibility to take care of her sisters, making sure they behave well. Meg is always the sensible one that stops others from going into chaos. Her heartwarming ideas and compliments are the most charming of all her characteristics. She plays an important role in the family as a leader of the other three children, giving them the courage and experience, while gaining her own along the way. Meg’s soft, warm personalities touch most people’s heart, and a model for those kind people.

Also known as Jo. She is boyish at first, brave, and had wanted to be in the army and fight for the country. At first, she never thought of marriage, thinking that it causes the connection in the family to collapse. And so she devoted all of herself into writing, but found that in the end, what she wrote is only what sells, instead of what she truly thinks, or of what she truly observes. In this part of the story, it emphasizes the importance of one’s true self, being ambitious and putting one’s all into what you truly love. But Jo then fell in love with Friedrich Bhaer, and realize that love, or marriage, isn’t something that breaks down hopes and future, but a new way to find yourself, and being freer than ever. In the characteristics of Jo, it composes that what you want or what you like may not be the same as reality, it would always be different and it is especially important to not to lose yourself — your personalities, your ambition, your dream — along the way as you adapt a different life of what you hope for.

She is mostly called Beth in the story. Beth is a shy and quiet girl. She’s good at music, especially playing the piano. She is never once selfish and is always helpful. Once in the story, the four girls were talking about their dreams, and what they want once they grow up, the three other girls all hoped for a rich and loving life while Beth only wishes to be by her mother and father’s side, not wanting pretty things, nor being rich, she is always content with what she already has, never wanting for more. Beth had always been an influence on her sisters, reminding them that even though they are poor, they shouldn’t suffer from it, because they will always have each other.

Amy is the youngest in the family. She has a talent in art, and went abroad to study more professional techniques when she realized that even though she is good at it, doesn’t mean she is a genius at it, so Amy then changed her direction of career into another way. Amy has always thought herself selfish for wanting lots and lots of things, being tired of poverty. But she turned her selfishness into ambition, wanting to gain more, and showing that she could do lots. But in the end, Amy realized that perhaps simple happiness is just what she needs.

I love Little Women because it describes the life of a regular, unrich family, of how they treat each other dearly, having small conflicts and quarrels from time to time, but you could see from the stories that as they grew, their own personalities change, they become mature and starts to learn what they really want in life, the choice between dream and real life. There are a certain amount of things we could learn from this story. I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages. If you finished reading Little Women and really enjoyed it, there are sequels to it: “Good Wives”, “Little Men”, and “Jo’s Boys”. I hope you enjoy watching them all!!!
