The Best Way to Remember Anything You Learn

The Feynman Technique Explained

We as humans are curious by nature and always try to learn new things constantly. But the problem starts when you try to recall unless you have a photogenic memory. Feynman technique is a simple learning technique to remember anything you learn and convert the information you consume to knowledge which you can apply in your life whenever the need arises.

The more knowledge you have fewer the surprises you are going to face in life because the new things connect to something you already know. The ultimate point of learning is to understand the world, but we don’t choose to learn anything new in a conscious way. We are conditioned to memorize for tests as we went through school and forgot most of them.

The Feynman technique helps you avoid the pain of forgetting the things you learn and help you to apply your newly gained knowledge sooner or later when needed without any struggle. So, let’s see how we can apply the Feynman technique to learn anything. There are 4 steps to the Feynman learning technique,

Take out a blank sheet of paper and write out the concepts you are learning as if you writing to a young kid. The reason behind this is that you will use simple words and avoid jargon at all costs since you are explaining it to a kid. It is found that we typically use complicated words when explaining something to mask our understanding of the subject. This way of taking notes helps us understand the concept at a much deeper level.

As you go on teaching, you would likely find shortcomings in your explanation. You might find it hard to explain some parts of the concept, that’s where your gap is. Fill that gap by going back to step 01 and repeat step 02. If you don’t find any gaps in your explanation then you are all set to move to the third step.

The third step is to organize your notes and build a compelling narrative that you can tell as a story. If at any point if you feel like your story is missing something, go back to step 02. Keep on iterating until you have a story that’s worth listening to.

To make sure you have truly understood what you have learnt, convey your gained knowledge to someone and the feedback you receive will tell you the truth about the understanding of your newly gained knowledge.

The Feynman technique is a wonderful way to gain and retain new knowledge. By applying this technique you will substantially supercharge your learning.

I hope this technique will help you boost your learning.

Cheers 🙌
