How Boris Has Risked A Second Wave

The UK government has cheapened the alert level system and mismanaged the reopening, leading to high levels of non-compliance.

When the UK finally went into lockdown in late March, with over 300 confirmed deaths (now believed to be around 550 including unconfirmed deaths), the government could say, for the first time, that it had taken the decisive action necessary to defend the nation from the outbreak.

Throughout seven arduous weeks of lockdown, the British people stayed at home, obeying the government’s main mantra:

This approach had broad support from the people that it was effectively subjugating, removing freedoms in return for a lower chance of contracting the virus. The British people approved of the government and PM Boris Johnson, only heightened when he fell seriously ill.

The government was riding on an approval high, and its message was cutting through.

But then came the difficult part. With Boris Johnson barely even recovered from his close shave, it fell partly to his deputy, the Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab, to manage the end of the lockdown. The plans had been made by the Cabinet collectively, but announced by the ailed PM on the 10th of May.

The new plans would allow more exercise and meeting up with one other in a socially distanced way — not a grand reopening. But the significant aspect was an ill-thought-out change in the government’s slogan. The “stay home” message was gone, and so too was the emotive evocation of the NHS, a weirdly revered British institution.

In their place came a slogan which appeared to represent a seismic shift in government advice and the restrictions, therefore not reflecting the reality of the situation.

The new “stay alert” was criticised heavily, and, as the above poster shows, the government wasn’t doing much to help to create the necessary connotations of ‘alert’. Picturing people at work is not a great idea when the only thing you’ve told people they can do is go for a few more jogs…
