A deserved sentence after years of silence

Former team USA doctor Larry Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison for sexually abusing young female gymnasts.

Nassar sexually abused gymnasts as the team doctor for both team USA and Michigan State University. This comes after Nassar was sentenced to 60 years for sexually abusing seven young athletes and child pornography convictions.

More than 150 victims, including USA olympians, took the stand during the seven-day hearing to confront Nassar for his years of abuse. Most of the victims were teenagers, with the youngest victim being Kyle Stephens when she was six years old. Stephens, now a young women, was the first to confront Nassar. Aly Raisman, two time olympic medalist, joined the young women as one by one the athletes expressed their anger.

The NCAA has opened an investigation against MSU. Many believe they knew about the abuse and kept quite. Lawmakers called for the resignation of Lou Anna Simon, president of MSU, during the hearing. Simon resigned soon after, and announced that she would donate 10 million dollars to help fund Nassar’s victims.

USA gymnastics chairman resigned along with several board members. The organization also ended their relationship with the training facility in Texas, where Nassar abused several gymnasts. Many victims said they were silenced by the University.

Amanda Thomashow, victim of Nassar, was let down by her University when they explained to her that she didn’t know the difference between a medical procedure and sexual assault.

The first women to come forward with sexual allegations was Rachael Denhollander, who was also the last victim to speak during the hearing. Denhollander never expected for that many victims to share the same story she kept quite about for more than a decade. Nassar preyed on young women for more than thirty years.

Many victims, including silver medalist Mattie Larson, said their love for gymnastics died because of Nassar. Larson delivered an emotional speech where she spoke about the measures she would take to get out from the Texas training facility Nassar abused her in. She said she would injure herself in order for her parents not to ask questions.

Judge Rosemarie Aquilina was in charge of sentencing Nassar. Throughout the hearing Aquilina showed that she was disgusted by Nassar’s presence . Many accused Aquilina of being unprofessional during the hearing. Victims of Nassar expressed Aquilina was the perfect judge for the case, a hero.
